Summer in full swing, less in the head, more in the world, living that life. Going to keep this tardy, short, and sweet.
Last week I was in LA visiting my dear friend Benny. After the most horrendous travel experience getting there I had a much needed week of relaxation and concentrated work on a new and exciting project. We recorded a lot, ate great food, went to the beach and reveled in the best melon I’ve ever had from the generous Melon Man at the Pasadena farmers market who gave us a fruit from his secret stash even after selling out. I’m so grateful to have such talented and curious friends - to be surrounded by people who are truly striving to be better and make meaningful art. It all feels quite full right now.

Speaking of which, here are some shows coming up this month:
Sun 7/14 - Playground Music Series with Grey McMurray and Jon Starks at Troost, 8pm
Mon 7/15 - Trio with Spencer Hoefert and Gabe Lee at Filthy Diamond, 9pm
Fri 7/19 - World of Flowers (duo with Jon) at Hart Bar. Sharing the bill with sweet friend Lava Gulls and Jumplink!
Sun 7/21 - World of Flowers again! At Hanging Garden in Herbert von King Park, sometime between 4 and 7pm?
Thur 7/25 - NS Quartet (with Yvonne Rogers, Jared Beckstead-Craan, and Jonas Esser) at Close Up, sets at 7:30pm and 9pm. Excited to play this cool new venue and try out some new music!
Something else to add to the calendar:
Fri 8/16 - Trio with Claire Dickson and Jon Starks at Owl Music Parlor on a staaacked bill with one of my favorite bands, Invisible Guy Trio (Ben Goldberg, Michael Coleman, Hamir Atwal), and the great Nate Brenner!

Arthur Russell - Love Is Overtaking Me
Miles Davis Quintet - Complete Recordings Live at Olympia 1960
Nico - Chelsea Girl
Canned Heat - The Best of Canned Heat
ML Buch - Skinned
Miguel Zenon - Esta Plena
What I’m reading:
Autonauts of the Cosmoroute - Julio Cortázar
Plainwater - Anne Carson
Glass, Irony, and God - Anne Carson
“All the windows of the world stood open and blowing.
In each window Isaiah saw a motion like flames.
Behind the flames he saw a steel fence lock down.
Caught between the flames and the fence was a deer.
Isaiah saw the deer of the nation burning all along its back.
In its amazement the deer turned and turned and turned
until its own shadow lay tangled around its feet like melted wings.”
Ta-ta fn,
